“Discovery of Witches”, by Deborah Harkness

The Discovery of Witches blends historical fiction, romance and fantasy.   This is a book for anyone who likes witches or vampires or demons.  This is a grown up tale as deer and rabbits and other animals meet their bloody end in gory detail.

Diana Bishop finds in the stack of Oxford’s Library an enchanted manuscript.   Manuscript on witchcraft. Diana is a descendant of witches who denied her heritage all these years until now.    The manuscript “Ashmole 782” draws the attention of Matthew Clairmont a 1500 year old vampire. Clairmont has been searching for the missing manuscript for hundreds of years because he believes it could unlock the mysteries of the origins of demons, vampires and witches. These creatures are dying out, their powers weakening with every generation, so Clairmont’s vested interest is in preserving his own species and unleashes the undead to stalk and harass Diana at the library. She turns to Clairmont for protection.

It’s forbidden love, breaking the laws of mingling among demons, witches and vampires—who live among humans.  Much of the book follows the lengths our protagonists go in order to be together.

This book has it all.
